Our group hosted the First Annual African-American Genealogy Group of Kentucky Seminar with national speaker, Angela Walton-Raji. Ms. Walton-Raji shared with the group some valuable "tips and tricks" for researching African-American records.

May 2018 - New Zion Baptist Church in Scott County, KY. Willa Gentry told the group about the history of the New Zion Community. Originally named Briar Hill, this community has a proud history which stretches back to 1872.

March 2018 - Zion Hill, Woodford County, KY
The group met at the FaithWay Baptist Church in Zion Hill, KY. In 1935, photographer, Helen Morrison, traveled to the inner Bluegrass region near Lexington, where she photographed the residents of two small African-American communities, Zion Hill and Sugar Hill. This meeting was an attempt to assist with the identification of the people in the photographs. Three of the pictures in the collection are below:

The African-American Research Forum was a panel discussion with local researchers who shared details of some the work they have done and how they were able to accomplish it. Participating researchers were: Yvonne Giles, Alicestyne Turley, Reinette Jones and Michael Denis.
